“Ava!” Tobias yelled out the open car window. He could feel her. She was close.

Up ahead a house silhouetted in the dusk lighting, the petite frame of his wife was in the doorway. She turned and his heart skipped a beat. She was there. She was alive.

She ran off the porch toward him, yelling for him. He opened the car door, not caring that it was still moving and jumped out. He needed to feel her, to hold her.

She hurried into his arms. Pulling her close, he silently vowed to never let anything happen to her again. She was everything to him. He kissed her face, her head, anywhere and everywhere in a heightened need to feel her.

“Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Did Caz…” Tobias couldn’t bring himself to finish the question. The man was already going to die for taking Ava, but how slow would depend on her answers.

“I’m fine. He just hit me a few times. My ribs were broken, but they’re almost healed completely now.”

Keeping her tight against his chest, he closed his eyes and held onto her. He wanted to rip Caz Desmond apart. He wanted to make him pay for taking his mate. But now he also wanted him to hurt for every pain he inflicted on her.

Tobias never understood how strong their mate bond was until that moment. The world stilled and the only thing left was her. She was his everything. He would die for her. He would kill for her. Slowing his breathing, he lowered his lips to hers. Soft but full of need. A need to claim her as his all over again roared through him, his wolf anxiously agreeing. But it wasn’t the time.

His hands explored her as he deepened the kiss. His tongue slipped past her lips, dancing with hers. His body reacted to her, creating a fire that only she could quench.

“Ahem,” Demetrio cleared his throat, breaking the moment.

Tobias growled. He’d been without his mate for days. The vampire was crossing a very thing line.

Picking Ava up, Tobias held her in his arms close to his chest. He wasn’t ready to let her go just yet. Only she could calm his nerves.

He turned to face his new friend. “Demetrio, this is Ava. Ava, this is Demetrio. He helped me find you.”

She smiled. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Demetrio held his devil’s grin. “And you, my gatinha.” He turned to stare at the house. His features saddened and his shoulders fell slightly before leaving them behind.

Knowing what waited for him inside the house was hard for Tobias. He hadn’t known Celso very long, but he saved Ava, and that meant everything to him. Since Demetrio was the vampire who sired him, it would be like losing a family member—or pack member. He wasn’t sure how he would handle that as an alpha. His father’s death had been hard on him, but now he had the pack under him. To lose any of them would gut him.

Ava buried her face into Tobias’s shoulder, breathing him in.
